What's the most secure and private messaging app ? WhatsApp, Telegram Messenger, Signal Messenger, Threema, Teams, Slack ? Which have true end-to-end encryption and which don't ?
Our customers ask us this question all the time.
The answer is: *none*
Because, even if these apps have end-to-end encryption, the keys are generated and managed by the App itself and you don't know how and who can access the keys to decrypt your messages.
This applies also to open-source Apps, unless you are capable of analyzing the entire source code, verifying how the keys are managed and compiling it yourself.
For environments where security and privacy is critical, individuals and enterprises should consider the Apps as simple communications vehicles, without any security.
The content itself should then be secured by the users, separately managing and making use of their own encryption keys.
This way, *any* App can be used to communicate securely, be it email, instant messaging, SMS, etc.
I agree, not the most user-friendly way of communicating and it comes with its pros/cons, but definitely the most secure when using commercial Apps.
This setup makes use of private/public keys and can be easily implemented for specific use-cases where security is paramount.
Have you tried implementing a similar setup, where YOU secure the content, instead of relying on the security of the application ?
